2020-07-29 2008-04-21 2013-03-20 Pu-238 used in RTGs that powered the nation’s space activities—a total of more than 300 kilograms (approximately 660 pounds) between 1959 and 1988. Only about 10 kilograms (22 pounds) were obtained from sources other than SRS. LEGACY Pu-238 fueled the first RTG used in space, launched aboard the Navy TRANSIT 4A Navigational Satellite in 1961. 1990-10-06 The heat produced by decaying Pu-238 is used as the heat source with a thermocouple. As can be seen in Fig. 2, fins serve as heat sinks to create a voltage across the thermocouple. Thus, the temperature gradient needed for the Seebeck Effect in Curiosity's RTG, results from hot Pu-238 and the cold atmosphere of Mars.

The power output of Pu-238 is about 0.5 watts/gram, with a half-life of about 87.7 years. At the end of the 87.7 years, the power output is still 0.5 Watts/gram, but there's only half as many grams of Pu-238 left in the original pellet. The rest has changed to U-234 which, with a half-life of 245000 years, doesn't contribute much to the energy In comparison to other RTG heat sources (Strontium-90, Cesium-137), Pu-238 has a relatively long half-life of 87.75 years, which is a desirable property for a long-life RTG. Approximately 300 kg (661 lb) of Pu-238 was produced by the Department of Energy (DOE) at the Savannah River Site between 1959 – 1988. Perhaps the best known radioisotope for RTG use is plutonium 238, or 238Pu.
