Through the use of small metal tubes inserted through the skin down to the bone, surgeons are able to move the muscle out of the way, then operate through the small tube (approximately 20 millimeters (2 cm) in diameter) precisely at the surgical site. In general, the goal of minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery is to stabilize the vertebral bones and spinal joints and/or relieve pressure being applied to the spinal nerves — often a result of conditions such as spinal instability, bone spurs, herniated discs, scoliosis or spinal tumors. Neck surgery may be necessary when less invasive treatments don’t work.
