Hubert L. Dreyfus (BA and PhD Harvard), Professor of Philosophy emeritus, is considered a leading interpreter of the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and, especially, Martin Heidegger. From 1960 to 1968 he taught Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1968 to 2016 he taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Hubert Dreyfus, a renowned philosopher and a professor of philosophy at UC Berkeley for almost 50 years, died early Saturday morning. He was 87 years old. Dreyfus studied philosophy at Harvard, arriving from Terre Haute, Indiana as a freshman in the fall of 1947.
